 Asbestos-Related Death Rankings

New York is the country’s fourth-most populated state.  New York has the fourth highest-ranking state in the U.S. for asbestos-related deaths.

An estimated 12,146 people died from asbestos-related sicknesses in New York between 1999 and 2013. Of those deaths, 2,253 — or approximately 18.6% — were recognized to the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma.

Nassau County, a suburban county on Long Island, saw 1,135 asbestos-related deaths in that 14-year period — the most out of any New York county. Erie and Suffolk counties rank No. 2 and No. 3. All these counties have an average of 75 asbestos-related deaths per year.

Queens County in New York City ranks at No. 4; Kings County (Brooklyn) is No. 6; New York County is No. 9, and the Bronx is No. 11 on the list of New York counties infected with asbestos.

Building Investigations

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection passed out a survey in the 1990s to assess the public’s risk of asbestos exposure in buildings. It brings into being 68% of buildings in the city enclosed materials with asbestos. At that time, the calculated total amount of asbestos-containing materials in the city was 323 million square feet, most of which was thermal system insulation.

Over the years, business and property owners in the state have taken footsteps to eliminate the asbestos from their constructions, and New York has enacted laws and regulations to promote safe handling and removal of contaminated materials.

A contractor in the Rochester area was suspected of incorrectly eliminating and disposing of contaminated materials taken from dozens of work sites, containing homes, businesses, schools, and health-care facilities. One more contractor, in Queens, who operated on abatement projects for decades, was sent to prison to prison and ordered to pay more than $1.5 million in restitution for violating the law.

Industrial Exposure

Mesothelioma is known as the signature asbestos-related cancer. As an occupational disease, it is preventable cancer, which makes it all the more tragic.

New York’s old shipyards, comprising the Brooklyn Navy Yard, are infamous for their asbestos-contamination problems.

Industrial workers who are most afflicted by asbestos exposure are those who have completed years in shipyard repair, heating-systems repair, the construction and automobile industries, and the Navy.

Hiring Legal Support

Depending on the specific issue the New York faces will need to consider which type of lawyer is best for the asbestos exposure and subsequent condition. The asbestos attorneys are often the first point of contact on how to deal with these problems. If an asbestos lawyer is the best choice, the professional will give details on how to proceed with a claim or other option. Some have accreditation through the Department of New York Affairs and can prepare, present and even initiate claims for the benefits.

The Legal Claim with a Lawyer

Through a full understanding of the injury and how to proceed to acquire the best possible compensation, the lawyer will support and protect the rights of the United States throughout the legal proceedings. He or she will also present the case and connect the exposure to asbestos with the military during the time of service.
