Job Overview

Experienced litigation paralegal or legal assistant, accountable for supporting litigation and regulatory enforcement proceedings at scale for all business units and functions operating in North America. This individual will, working with other internal legal professionals, be responsible for supporting a wide variety of risk management, dispute resolution, and litigation matters, which may involve

(1) complex commercial claims; (2) employment disputes; (3) franchise litigation; (4) intellectual property disputes; (5) personal injury and property damage litigation; (6) interactions with government agencies; and (7) small claims matters, among other areas of responsibility. This candidate will join a dynamic team that collectively manages hundreds of pre-litigation and litigation matters, while responding to day-to-day legal needs of fast-paced business clients.

This position is also expected to provide back-up and overflow assistance to other paralegals in the Legal Department, and to participate in special projects as assigned. The role calls for a highly-motivated individual who is detail-oriented and can maintain focus and momentum on projects despite competing priorities of other project participants. Must be capable of building credible relationships with a variety of constituencies, and competently relaying facts and legal advice between attorneys and stakeholders.


Accountabilities

The job holder will be required to manage a varied work load. Key areas will include:

  • Assistance with the management of day-to-day pre-litigation disputes and lawsuits filed by or against the company, including interactions with government agencies, which may involve leading internal discovery efforts and assisting with the preparation for key depositions, mediation, trials and participating in other related events as necessary.
  • Responding to subpoenas, garnishments, and requests for information from third-parties.
  • Management of outside counsel with little or no direct supervision.
  • Resolution of escalated customer complaints in accordance with business objectives.
  • Leading internal discovery efforts, including e-discovery initiatives.
  • Analysis of legal risks related to complex business situations, as well as the development of practical recommendations that meet the commercial and legal needs of the company while best positioning the company to avoid or be prepared for litigation.
  • Project management responsibilities over special projects and initiatives.
  • Developing and providing training to internal stakeholders, customer service representatives, and others, to reduce legal exposure, as needed.
  • Analysis of litigation trends and patterns and recommendation of appropriate risk-mitigating measures.
  • Assistance with implementing strategic priorities and improved processes for the litigation team to ensure consistency with business objectives and practices.
  • Serving as the liaison between external counsel and internal clients with respect to key litigation matters.
  • Organization and management of litigation team legal files.

Competencies and Qualifications

  • Capable of project management duties, including acting as a primary contact with outside litigation or regulatory counsel.
  • Participate as a member of a collaborative and empowered legal team that provides timely, efficient and effective legal support to all business units companywide.
  • Business maturity coupled with the highest integrity.
  • Ability to successfully manage a large volume of litigation matters with significant independence.
  • Ensure that health, safety and environment objectives and targets are met with the Legal team in North America.

Education:

Four year degree, paralegal certification, or equivalent work experience.

Work Experience

Demonstrated ability to work cohesively with others.

Minimum of seven years directly relevant experience that includes complex commercial litigation support, or equivalent business experience. 

Ability to independently manage a challenging workload in a fast-paced work environment under the stress of deadlines.

Proven ability to manage document production with substantive input from attorneys and non-attorneys.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills (including good listening skills).

Team player who is able to work collaboratively across functions, with all types of people, and at all levels including executive management. 

A high degree of professionalism throughout all interactions.

Must have strong customer service orientation.

Should have proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint.  Experience with other Microsoft Office applications a plus.  Knowledge of iManage also a plus.
