Google to pay $170 million settlement in a child privacy case

Google and YouTube agreed Wednesday to pay $170 million in order to settle with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the New York Attorney General.

The settlement arises out of allegations made by both the FTC and the New York Attorney General that the companies violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act by collecting children’s personal information without providing sufficient notice or parental consent.

The companies are to pay $136 million to the FTC and $34 million to the state of New York as per the terms of the settlement. The settlement also requires the companies to develop systems in order to comply with COPPA.
